10W-30 vs 10W-40 Bike Oil: Grades and JASO Explained

Choose 10W-30 or 10W-40 according to your motorcycle or scooter's owner manual. Neither grade is automatically better, and matching viscosity alone does not establish that an oil is suitable.
Engine-oil bottles carry several different labels: viscosity, performance standards, motorcycle or scooter application, and mineral or synthetic formulation. Reading them in the right order makes choosing a bottle much simpler.
What do 10W-30 and 10W-40 mean?
Viscosity describes resistance to flow. In a multigrade oil, the number before W describes a low-temperature viscosity classification; W stands for winter. The second number describes the operating-temperature viscosity grade. Castrol's viscosity explanation distinguishes these two measurements.
| Label | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 10W | A low-temperature viscosity classification shared by both examples. | The oils are not necessarily identical formulations. |
| 30 or 40 | The operating-temperature viscosity grade; 40 is the higher grade. | 40 is not an automatic upgrade over 30. |
| 10W-30 / 10W-40 | The oil's multigrade viscosity designation. | Its complete suitability for your engine and clutch. |
These numbers are not an engine-size rating or a simple ambient-temperature range. For example, 10W-40 does not mean “use between 10°C and 40°C”. Do not choose a different grade solely because the weather feels hotter or the bottle looks more premium.
Read the manual before the front label
Find the lubrication section for the exact model and manufacturing version. Write down the permitted viscosity, required performance specifications and oil quantity for the service being carried out. If the manual gives several grades with conditions, follow those conditions.
A previous service invoice can be useful context, but it should not override the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. If the manual is missing, look for the correct official document; TVS's manual selector is one example of a model-specific lookup.
Why the JASO label matters
Some motorcycles use a wet clutch with shared engine oil. Some scooters use a different clutch arrangement and specify a different oil classification. That is why two bottles with the same viscosity can have different intended applications.
For example, Motul describes Scooter Power 4T MB 10W-30 as an oil for scooters without a wet clutch. Its product catalogue also distinguishes scooter formulations carrying JASO MA and MB classifications. This is a reason to read the specification, not a recommendation to use either product in every scooter.
If your manual requires MA or MA2, check that requirement on the bottle and product data sheet. Do the same for an MB requirement. Check the requested API category as well; an API label and a JASO label describe different aspects of the product.
Does fully synthetic mean it will suit my bike?
No. Mineral, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic describe formulation categories. They do not replace the viscosity and application requirements. Castrol's motorcycle-oil guide explains why motorcycle lubrication requirements can differ from those of car engines, particularly where the clutch and gearbox share the oil.
First identify a suitable specification. Then compare suitable products on price, pack size and the manufacturer's information. Do not extend the service interval simply because you bought a synthetic oil.
Your five-point buying check
- Exact vehicle model, variant and manufacturing year.
- Manual-specified viscosity and the conditions attached to it.
- Required API and JASO classifications, where specified.
- Correct quantity for that service; do not assume a whole bottle is the fill amount.
- A sealed, clearly identified pack from a seller who can provide an invoice.
Questions riders often ask
Can I switch to 10W-40 because my engine is older?
Age alone is not enough to select a different grade. Ask a qualified workshop to assess oil consumption or engine problems and check the manufacturer's permitted grades.
Is there one oil-change interval for all bikes?
No. Use the distance and time schedule in your own manual, including any instructions for demanding use. This guide does not assign one interval to every vehicle.
